7 Ways to Keep a Clean Backpack
Having a clean backpack makes it look new no matter how long we've had it.
We often look for a backpack that's sturdy and can last long. But as time passes, it starts to look old and worn out.
Who wants to keep using a backpack that looks rundown?
Here's how you can keep your backpack clean:
1 – Keep Stains Away
As they say, ‘prevention is better than cure'. It will be easier to clean your backpack if there is no stubborn dirt.
When you purchase a backpack, it's a good idea to purchase a stain-repellent spray as well.
Apply the stain-repellent spray on the backpack before using it. This will serve as an invisible cover to keep stains away.
After a few months, clean the backpack and re-apply the stain-repellent spray.
2 – Spot Clean
If there is dirt in just one area of the backpack, spot clean it.
Dip a sponge, rag, or brush in a basin with warm, soapy water. Clean the area where there's dirt.
If the stain is still there, rub lemon on it and leave to dry under the sun. When it dries, it should leave you with a clean backpack.
3 – Machine Wash
Check the label. If it says it's machine washable, toss it in the washer.
But before you do this, check all the compartments and pockets. Make sure they're empty. And leave them unzipped.
Put your bag inside a laundry bag. This will prevent the straps from getting caught in the washer. Otherwise, your backpack or the machine might be damaged.
If you don't have a laundry bag, you can substitute it with a pillowcase.
Use a gentle detergent.
4 – Hand Wash with Baking Soda
Again, empty all pockets and compartments before you start washing it.
In a small basin, mix baking soda and a small amount of water. Aim for a paste-like consistency.
Dip a brush in your baking soda mixture and brush it on the surface of the backpack.
This method is not advisable for leather backpacks. Likewise, if the backpack has leather details, avoid that area.
After covering the entire backpack surface area, wash it with water. Then, hang it inside-out to dry.
5 – Air-dry Only
When you're done washing your backpack, hang it inside-out to dry. Never use a dryer.
Wait for it to dry completely before taking it out. Inspect all the compartments and pockets to make sure there is no water residue.
6 – Use Anti-bacterial, Deodorizing Spray
After cleaning the backpack, spray it with a deodorizing spray. This will make your backpack safe from bacteria. Also, it will eliminate bad odor and keep it smelling good.
7 – Cleaning a Leather Backpack
If the backpack is made from leather, it is best cleaned with a sponge or soft cloth.
Dip the sponge or cloth in a basin with warm water. Wring out the water and wipe it on the backpack.
To preserve the quality of the leather, use a leather conditioner. If you don't have one, substitute it with olive oil.
Put a little amount of conditioner or oil on your cloth and wipe it on your leather backpack.
